Helfer is a native of rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis and Elaine Helfer. She has German, English and Swedish descent. She was a graduate of Stettin's William E. Hay Composite High School. Three of her sisters Tammy, Tara and Trena resided and worked on their farm with her family. When she was waiting in theater line the scout of an agency for modeling was able to spot Helfer.
